石墨的低磨擦並不是單以其結晶的結構為基礎， 它也依賴水汽下提供了表面低的膠黏，所以在大氣中以及水汽存在下，發展出最好的潤滑效能，但在真空中，石墨潤滑作用不良，故石墨粉不宜用於真空及太空機件的潤滑。
但二硫化鉬則不同，無論在大氣中，水汽下，或真空中，二硫化鉬均能有效潤滑機件，此點較石墨粉為優，故可用於太空等真空中作業的機件
